Guy Barnett speaking in the SenateAs a Senator for Tasmania, Guy had senior parliamentary roles in government and opposition involving law and justice, health, healthy lifestyles, diabetes, economics, public accounts, overseas aid and cyber-safety. Guy Barnett lobbied hard for his home state in the Federal Parliament.

Guy Barnett’s Parliamentary duties involved being Scrutiny of Government Spokesman for the Coalition, Chairman of the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation and References Committees and member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Cyber Safety and the Joint Committee on Public Accounts & Audit.

Guy Barnett was a strong and successful campaigner for healthy active lifestyles and the prevention of obesity and diabetes, especially among children. He worked to establish effective links between government, community and business groups to work together to create positive outcomes for a healthier Australia.

Guy was for many years, the only Federal Parliamentarian living with Type 1 diabetes and was a founding and Executive Member of the Parliamentary Diabetes Support Group.

Guy also pushed for greater recognition of the contribution of volunteers in Australian communities and regularly held community events to recognize this contribution.

He was a leader in the Make Poverty History campaign, ensuring that the fight against third world poverty remains on the national agenda and was co-convenor of the Parliamentary Friends of the Millennium Development Goals.

Guy was both Chair and Deputy Chair of the Australia-Denmark Friendship Group.
